  • Late evenings provide a quieter experience, as the absence of large crowds allows for more personal interaction with guides. The palace’s lighting at night enhances its ethereal beauty.
  • We recommend you take the Secret Itineraries Tour, which offers a fascinating glimpse into the palace’s secret history. It includes stories about Casanova and hidden parts of the building, like the torture chamber and prison cells.
  • Arriving early allows you to avoid the worst of the crowds. The palace gets very busy, and visiting early allows you to enjoy the artwork and architecture with fewer people around.
  • The palace is not air-conditioned. If you visit during warmer months, go in the morning to avoid the midday heat.
  • The Doge’s Palace has numerous steps and no elevator due to the historical nature of the building. Be prepared for a lot of walking and stair climbing. Wear comfortable shoes and consider this if you have mobility issues.
  • The prison tour, especially the lower levels, is a sobering and intriguing part of the visit. It offers a reflective and immersive experience without the noise of other tourists. Make sure to allocate enough time for this portion of the tour.
  • Use applications like Babbel to learn the basics of Italian and make your vacation to Italy even more enjoyable.
  • Remember, photography is not allowed inside the palace in most places.
  • It is best to dress modestly, as you may want to cross over and visit St. Mark’s Basilica, a religious place that requires respectful attire.
  • For a self-guided exploration, consider purchasing an audio guide available in various languages, costing five euros.

Highlights

Staircases and Courtyard

The Doge’s Palace boasts a grand courtyard at the center. Staircases like the Giants’ Staircase, with its statues, symbolize power, while the Golden Staircase symbolizes Italian wealth and opulence.

Chamber of the Great Council

The Chamber of the Great Council in the Doge’s Palace is a vast room measuring 53 meters long and 25 meters wide. It was where the Great Council met to discuss laws, elect officials, and make important decisions.

The Bridge of Sighs

The Bridge of Sighs is an enclosed limestone bridge connecting the Doge’s Palace to the prisons. Built in 1614 by Antonio Contino, it symbolizes the convicts’ last view of Venice before imprisonment, evoking sighs of resignation and despair.

Doge’s Palace Prison

The Doge’s Palace in Venice also housed the prison cells. The attic prison’s (Piombi) lead roofs made it extremely hot in summer and cold in winter. The squalid conditions in the prisons under the Doge’s chambers caused death and disease, resulting in the New Prison.

Doge’s Palace Armory

It houses a fascinating collection of weapons and armor, including medieval and Renaissance artifacts. This collection includes authentic armor from historical figures like the French king Henry IV and artifacts captured at famous battles like the Battle of Lepanto in 1571.

Doge’s Palace Paintings

The Doge’s Palace houses exquisite paintings by renowned artists like Titian and Veronese, showcasing Venetian artistry and history. These masterpieces adorn the palace’s grand halls, offering visitors a glimpse into Venice’s rich cultural heritage.

What Our Customers Say

Glad that I booked the entry tickets online

I took the self-guided tour. It is well worth the expense. Everything worked out perfectly. I just showed my phone to the ticket attendant and walked right in. No problems. Did not see a location to buy tickets. Glad I bought them online.

An interesting tour

This secret itinerary tour was very good. It was good to see the “behind the scenes” of the palace. Our guide was well-informed and happy to tell and show, which is always a bonus. It also takes you a bit separate from mass tourism. I wish I combined this tour with something similar at St Mark’s, even if it was just “skip the line.”

Well Informative Tour

It is definitely worth booking the Doge’s Palace & St Mark’s Basilica Skip-the-Line tour, especially to avoid the long queues. This is not a ‘tour’ of Venice but a guided tour of the Doge’s Palace and St. Mark’s Basilica. Overall, it is very informative, and two hours is ideal.
