Herculaneum is located on the foot of Mount Vesuvius in Erclano, southern Italy.

It is just a short drive of about 20 minutes from Pompeii.

Herculaneum is easily accessible from Ercolano station in Naples by the Circumvesuviana commuter train.

Getting to Herculaneum will take only 20 minutes from Napoli Garibaldi or Pompiee Scavi station, with trains running at least every half an hour.

Getting from Naples to Herculaneum

Boarding a Circumvesuviana train from Napoli Centrale (Piazza Garibaldi) to Ercolano is the easiest way to reach Herculaneum.

The journey will take only 25 minutes. 

For a better chance of finding a seat, consider boarding from Porta Nolana station, one stop before Napoli Centrale.

Get off at Ercolano Scavi station and simply walk downhill towards the ruins

The walk will take around 10 minutes. 

Herculaneum from Sorento 

To reach Herculaneum, board the Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento train station, going towards Erclano and get off at Ercolano Scavi.

The journey will take about 40 minutes; during peak times, the train runs every 50 minutes.

Upon reaching Ercolano Scavi station, walk straight down via IV Novembre (4th November street) towards the sea, leading you directly to the ruins’ entrance.

The walk will take merely 5 minutes.

Driving Directions to Herculaneum

You can reach Herculaneum from the airport by taking the highway in as little as 20 minutes.

Leave the E45 (A3) highway at the Ercolano and follow the signs to Scavi (Excavations). 

You can find paid parking near the archaeological site.

Herculaneum and Pompeii, both sites

You can use public or private transportation if both sites are on your list.

A private car with a driver is optimal if money is not a concern.

For public transport, take the Circumvesuviana train towards Sorrento, which starts from Porta Nolana station in Naples. 

For Herculaneum ruins, you get off at Ercolano Scavi station; for Pompiee, get off at Pompeii Scavi-Villa Dei Misteri.

From Ercolano station to the entrance to Herculaneum ruins, it is just 500 meters.

And the entrance to Pompeii’s ruins is just 25 meters outside the station.

Herculaneum Parking

There is no parking facility at Herculaneum. However, you can find some parking options near the ruins’ entrance.

Here are some parking options near the entrance of the archaeological site to help you park your vehicle.

Herculaneum Underground Car Park

 This car park is the most economical and convenient parking facility at the Herculaneum, near the Ercolano Scavi station of the Circumvesuviana Train line. 

You can walk to the Herculaneum, about 5 minutes from the parking lot.

The parking fee is around €2 per hour.


Easy Parking Portici 

This parking service is about 3 km from the ruins and operates from 6 am to 10 pm. 

Portici Easy parking costs €1.50 per hour or €10 per day.

They also have a shuttle service to take you to the ruins.


Green Parking Di Luca Zona 

This is a short and long-term parking service in Ercolano, near the Circumvesuviana station.

Green parking is at a distance of 1.5 km from the entrance of the Herculaneum site.

For this parking service, you must pay €3 per hour or €15 per day in cash or by credit card.

The parking lot has security cameras, and guards open from 7 am to 8 pm.

 They also offer a shuttle service to take you to the ruins.
