The American Museum of Natural History is located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City, next to Theodore Roosevelt Park, across the street from Central Park.

Various public and private transportation options are available throughout the city to visit the American Museum of Natural History.

Here are some of the best transportation options to reach AMNH:

1. By Subways

You can use Train B (on weekdays) or C to reach the 81st Street/Museum of Natural History station.

From this station, it is a 1-minute walk to reach AMNH. 

One can also board Train 1 to Broadway and West 79th Street Station, which is just two blocks west of the Museum.

After exiting the station, walk for 10 minutes to reach the attraction. 

Note: The 81st Street subway station is not wheelchair accessible. The nearest subway station with Wheelchair accessibility is 72nd Street station
From here, you can take the northbound M7 Bus on Amsterdam Avenue. 

2. By Bus

Buses are one of the most popular means of transportation to the American Museum of Natural History.

You can take the M79 bus bound to the east/west of West 79th Street and exit at West 81st Street, next to the Museum. 

You can also hop on buses like M7, M10, M11, M86, and M104, which halt at bus stops near the Museum.

3. By Train

Visitors can hop on train 1 to reach the American Museum of Natural History. 

This train stops at Broadway and West 79th Street Station

4. By Taxi and Car

You can Uber or take other rental cabs to AMNH. 

Beware of traffic in New York in case you plan to arrive at the museum by cab or car.

Entrances and Exits

Now that we know the transportation and ways to reach the American Museum of Natural History, let’s understand the entrances and exits to this famous attraction.

  • There is an entry and exit point to AMNH from Central Park West at 79th Street (upstairs). 

However, there are other entrances that you can use to access the Museum, such as 81st Street/Rose Center for Earth and Space or Columbus Avenue at 79th Street/Gilder Center.

  • Museum members can get priority access and enter through Central Park West and 79th Street (ground level, under the grand staircase).
  • For school groups arriving by Subway, the entrance is right at the 81st Street B/C station), Monday-Friday, 10 am-2 pm. 
  • Access-a-Ride Service and GPS devices can use these addresses:
    • 56 West 81st Street – Entrance from 81st Street/Rose Center
    • 415 Columbus Avenue – Entrance at Columbus Ave/Gilder Center.

Please note: There is no driveway at the Gilder entrance.
