Niagara Falls at night was forever changed more than a century ago in 1860 when 200 Bengel Lights were arranged to illuminate the Falls in honor of the Prince of Wales’s upcoming visit.
From then until the early 1920s, the Falls were illuminated for additional Royal visits and special events.
When a group of Niagara Falls businessmen lobbied to improve the Niagara Falls lights, they became more common.
The ‘generators’ group raised enough money to purchase and install 24 new arc lights.
This eventually led to the establishment of the Niagara Falls Illumination Board in 1925, which was responsible for the management, operation, and maintenance of the illumination lights.
The Niagara Falls Illumination Board has financed and operated the Falls Illumination since its inception.
The nightly illumination of Niagara Falls has dramatically improved and changed over the years, with an update as recently as December 2016.
A $4 million lighting grid was unveiled, delivering twice the brightness and a broader spectrum of color while using a quarter of the energy of previous lighting.
The existing Xenon lights were replaced with new, energy-efficient LED lighting technology in 2016, nearly 20 years after the last significant investment in fall lighting.
These new lights provide more than double the previous lighting levels, programmable lighting, and a broader color spectrum.
The lights also fill gaps in the lighting, resulting in a more consistent lighting effect.
The Niagara Falls Illumination Board has funded and operated the ‘Illumination of the Falls since 1925.

While the Niagara Falls Illumination Board is happy to provide special illuminations in colors chosen by registered charities to honor their causes, the Falls are lit up in all colors of the rainbow.
These requests can be made through Niagara Parks, including your preferred date and color.
