About Pantheon

The Pantheon, also known as “Santa Maria della Rotonda,” is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to “St. Mary and the Martyrs” since the seventh century.

According to the Pantheon Rome map, the building is circular and has a pediment above a portico with eight granite Corinthian columns (two groups of four behind).

Located beneath a concrete dome, the rotunda is connected to the porch by a rectangular hall that opens to the sky.

It is a perfect sphere that is embedded in a cylinder that is 43 meters (142 feet) wide and 43 meters (142 feet) tall.

The first instinct for the layman wandering into the Pantheon is to look upwards at the dome.

The oculus is a round opening in the dome’s center that provides the Pantheon’s only natural light.

It is 27 feet in diameter and open to the sky (the floor slopes gently to allow for rainwater runoff).

When you start looking around, you are struck by the lavishness.

The Pantheon’s walls contain monumental tombs, including that of the artist Raphael (on the left as you enter).

The Google map of Pantheon Rome refers to the plaza in front of the Pantheon as the Piazza della Rotonda.
