Free entry to the Roman Forum

On the first Sunday of every month, visitors can enter the Roman Forum for free.

However, since everybody can get in without buying a ticket, long lines result in long waiting times.

If you are below 18 years of age, entry is anyway free for you. EU citizens between 18-25 years old get discounted tickets too.

What to See in the Roman Forum

Starting from the basilica, you’ll follow Via Sacra, the main street of the Forum, leading you into its core, where you’ll find some key temples.

Your journey will take you past the circular Temple of Romulus, and further on, you’ll encounter the columned Temple of Antoninus and Faustina, originally a 2nd-century CE temple later converted into a church.

Across the way stands the Temple of Caesar, also known as the Temple of Devine Julius, marking where Julius Caesar was cremated following his assassination in 44 BCE.

Not far from here, you’ll spot three white columns, remnants of the 5th-century BCE, the Temple of Castor and Pollux.

Adjacent to these columns are the remains of the Temple of Vesta, an esteemed temple with its sacred flame overlooked by the Vestal Virgins.

It is near the House of the Vestal Virgins, known for its central grassy atrium.

Hidden on the far side of the Forum is the 6th-century church of Santa Maria Antiqua, the oldest and most significant church in the area. 

It houses a wealth of early Christian art, including exquisite 6th- to 9th-century frescoes and a suspended depiction of the Virgin Mary with the child, one of the earliest icons in existence.

Inside the church, you can explore the Ramp of Domitian, an underground passage emperors use to access the Forum from their Palatine palaces.

How long you should spend at the Roman Forum 

A visit to the Roman Forum usually takes two to three hours.

However, it is recommended to give at least half a day to explore this historical gem comprehensively.

It typically requires around 90 minutes at the Colosseum,  an hour to the Roman Forum, and about thirty minutes to Palatine Hill.
