St. Mark’s Museum

A sightseeing trip to Venice isn’t complete without a visit to St. Mark’s Museum.

Within the historic basilica of the same name, the museum displays artifacts on the city’s history, culture, and war spoils from the Fourth Crusade.

Aside from ancient paintings, mosaics, manuscripts, sculptures, tapestries, and liturgical vestments, the museum also houses four bronze horse statues made from copper.

The museum also contains the Sala dei Banchetti, a banquet hall that houses Paolo Veneziano’s pall, a weekday altarpiece.

Initially, this altarpiece covered the Pala d’Oro, a Byzantine-style altar screen made of gold and other precious stones.

There are also fragments of ancient mosaics, Persian carpets, illuminated manuscripts of St. Mark’s liturgies, and wool, silk, and silver Gobelin tapestries in the museum.

The museum has recently undergone some major modifications and reopened after being closed for some time.

Visitors can now explore the museum for a nominal fee and get a first-hand experience of Venetian art and history.

As the museum overlooks the city from its roof, it is one of the city’s must-see destinations.

Different Museums on St. Mark’s Basilica Premises

Inside St. Mark’s Basilica are two museums – the Correr Museum and the National Archaeological Museum.

These are places where you can see lots of exciting things.

Correr Museum

The Correr Museum is a cool place in Venice, Italy, with lots of old art, sculptures, coins, drawings, books, manuscripts, jewelry, coins, and even musical instruments.

It was founded by the last King of Venice, Giovanni Battista Correr, in 1830.

There are sections devoted to famous Venetian painters like Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese.

There are paintings from the 16th to 19th centuries, Venetian Republic coins, and Canaletto, Guardi, and Longhi sketches.

National Archeological Museum, Venice

The National Archaeological Museum of Venice is near the Correr Museum and Marciana Library.

There are sixteen rooms full of sculptures and bronze statues from ancient Greece and Rome here.

And important Ventians interested in antiquities collected these exhibits.
