By Subway: Take lines 1, 4, 5, R, or W from South Ferry station to Battery Park.

By Train: To get to the closest ferry stop from the Statue of Liberty, take the PATH network to either the Groove stop in New Jersey or the World Trade Center train station in New York.

By Bus: Board any of the following routes: BXM18, M20, M15-SBS, QM 11, or QM 25. The closest bus stops are at Batter PI, Whitehall Street, and South-Ferry Terminal.

By Taxi: To get to the Battery Park station, hail a cab in your neighborhood or use Uber or Lyft to hail one.

• Never carry both dual-purpose items and guns. No smoking is allowed on Liberty Island or on the ferry.

Architecture

Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, a French sculptor, created the statue, while Gustave Eiffel built the metal framework inside.

It is a neoclassical sculpture with a magnificent attitude, flowing robes, and an elevated arm holding a torch that evokes traditional Greco-Roman elements.

The base of the monument displays a hendecagram, an 11-vertice star polygon that inspired the statue’s design.

With the pedestal included, its height is 305 feet, and its weight is an incredible 450,000 pounds. 

The statue is made of less than 3/32 of an inch thick copper sheets held up by an iron framework. 

Her torch represents enlightenment, and her crown has seven rays that signify the seven continents.

Insider Tips

• It can be really hot in the summer months, and there are not many shaded areas, so be prepared with lots of sunscreen or umbrellas if needed. 
• Bringing bags, backpacks or even small handbags is not allowed, so leaving them in the locker is better. It will cost you around 25 cents.
• There are 196 steps to reach the top of the pedestal and a 162-step spiral staircase on the crown, so make sure you wear appropriate shoes. 
• The second level is best if you want to click on beautiful pictures and get the best views.
• There is an elevator to go down from the pedestal, but not for the crown.
• The Statue of Liberty Museum is so big that if you are interested in the history and construction of Lady Liberty, you will need a full day to explore all the exhibits and rooms.
• We recommend bringing your own water and food if you are a budget traveler to avoid expensive items.
• Also, leave as early as possible to catch your ferry because there are different ports, and it can be very crowded around noon.
