Life in the cold
A newly designed enclosure that matches the natural climatic conditions of Humboldt penguin habitats allows you to watch these animals while swimming underwater.
To enable them to swim, their wings have been converted into fins. Their thick fat layers protect them from the cold and deflect water.
Moreover, they have a thick coat of feathers that allows them to retain warm air from their body heat.
They can blend in with the sunlight or the blackness of the bed when they are in the water thanks to their camouflage mechanism, which is why they have dark backs and light bellies.
While adults have white bellies with an arched black line, juvenile Humboldt penguins have silvery bellies.
They consume plankton-containing fish, squid, and tiny crustaceans as food. The Humboldt penguins swim about 45 km/h and descend to depths of 70 m.
