Oceanário de Lisboa, or the Lisbon Oceanarium, is a world-renowned aquatic wonder in Portugal.

Featuring mesmerizing displays of marine life, it is committed to its conservation and education.

The Lisbon Oceanarium’s main draw is its enormous central tank, which holds seven million liters of seawater.

It’s a spectacular sight, home to coral, tropical fish, sharks, rays, barracuda, turtles, and even a rare sunfish.

Divided into four distinct sections, they represent different marine habitats – two temperate, one tropical, and one arctic.

Beyond the tank, you’ll discover outdoor enclosures with penguins and sea otters.

Also, exhibits showcase giant spider crabs, fluorescent jellyfish, seahorses, etc.

Penguin Beach is a charming habitat where penguins swim and play. The Kelp Forest houses seahorses, jellyfish, and more.

There’s also a changing exhibit space.

Moreover, the oceanarium offers educational programs, talks, tours, and workshops for a deeper understanding of marine life and conservation.

You can purchase your Lisbon Oceanarium exhibition tickets for both permanent and temporary displays online to secure admission conveniently and in advance.

Main Aquariums

Part of the Lisbon Oceanarium’s permanent exhibitions, the main aquarium is an aquatic marvel holding seawater equivalent to around 14 swimming pools

Spanning two levels, it is home to around 100 species from across the globe.

Around this central tank, you’ll find four interconnected habitats—the North Atlantic rocky coast, the Antarctic coastal line, temperate Pacific kelp forests, and tropical Indian coral reefs.

The stunning diversity of the Lisbon Oceanarium flora and fauna on display in the main tank is sure to captivate you.

From the tropical section, you can watch manta rays and sharks glide gracefully through colorful coral formations amid vibrant tropical fish.

Large acrylic sheets create a seamless connection, giving the impression of one vast ocean.

The first floor adds to the experience with 25 thematic aquariums, each replicating its specific habitat’s characteristics.

It’s a charming journey through diverse marine environments that allows you to appreciate the richness of ocean life up close.

With an online ticket to the Lisbon Oceanarium, you can fully immerse yourself in the enchanting world of aquatic exhibitions.

Submerged Forests

The Lisbon Oceanarium unveiled a stunning temporary exhibition in 2015: ‘Florestas Submersas by Takashi Amano,’ an underwater tribute to tropical forests.

This exhibition reflects the oceanarium’s commitment to nature conservation and environmental education.

Though covering just a fraction of Earth, tropical forests harbor over half of its biodiversity.

‘Forests Underwater’ is not just an exhibition; it’s an invitation to explore the captivating world of tropical forests and the artistry within the Lisbon Oceanarium.

At its core is a monumental masterpiece by the renowned aquascaper Takashi Amano: a 40-meter-long tank brimming with 160,000 liters of freshwater.

Here, you can immerse yourself in a sensory experience surrounded by the forest’s sights, sounds, and scents.

Amano’s artistry captures the very essence of these ecosystems, inviting contemplation, relaxation, and a profound connection with nature.

Integrating Japanese gardening techniques and the wabi-sabi concept, Amano celebrates nature’s imperfections.

Initially planned for a two-year run, Forests Underwater at Lisbon Oceanarium by Takashi Amano remains open today.

This exhibition promises to transport you to a timeless realm where nature’s beauty is preserved as if it were a century ago.

Lisbon Oceanarium tickets get you access to all the exhibitions, where you can explore the diverse marine habitats, the mesmerizing central tank, and the enchanting temporary displays.
