Basilisk

In the long list of Harry Potter Creatures, Basilisk is among the first Harry Potter mythical creatures to be featured early in the series.

The menacing Basilisk lived below Hogwarts and emerged in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. It is a giant serpent known as the king of the serpents.

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter kills a basilisk after a nail-biting struggle.

But that’s a well-known story. You can see a model of this fearsome creature in Harry Potter World!

It’s 30 feet long, has jaws 3 feet deep and combines visual and practical effects.

To learn more about the special and visual effects, read Harry Potter VFX.

This aquatronic model could move and even slither on a track to get close to Harry during the end fight scene.

The VFX team tried to reduce CGI usage as much as possible. Basilisk is one of the highlights among many Harry Potter creatures in the Warner Bros studio in London.

There are plenty of trivia and fascinating behind-the-scenes stories that you might not otherwise know.

You can book a fully-guided Warner Bros studio tour and learn about it in a small group of 8 people.

Harry Potter Creatures Buckbeak

One of the most adorable and loved Harry Potter magical creatures, without any doubt, is Buckbeak.

It was part of the film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

You will be glad to hear that you can see Buckbeak on your Harry Potter World tour in London.

Three life-size animatronic versions of Buckbeak the Hippogriff, one standing, another rearing, and the last lying down, were made by designers.

The Creature Effects team inserted and glued each feather piece, and Buckbeak was ready just a few minutes before his shot!

Its designer drew inspiration from real birds and consulted vets and physiologists for the proportion of Buckbeak’s legs and wings.

There are other similarly meticulous Harry Potter props and Harry Potter sets that you can witness on the Warner Bros studio tour in London.

Harry Potter Creatures Goblin Heads

Another one of the Harry Potter Mythical Creatures are Goblin. They acted as the bank officials and tellers at Gringott Banks in Diagon Alley.

You can witness the spectacular Harry Potter set piece of Gringotts Bank in the Warner Bros studio.

The Gringotts Bank was one of the most elaborate, beautiful and opulent pieces of the Harry Potter set you can explore on your Warner Bros Studio tour.

The team gave each goblin a particular personality perceptible in their distinctive ears, chins and noses to ensure they all looked different.

They used prosthetics for the scenery inside the Gringotts Bank in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows II.

Each goblin look is a combination of prosthetics and make-up. Thus, the Harry Potter Creatures is a combined effort of VFX, SFX, and more.

You can explore some of the prosthetics in the Warner Bros studio in London and try to challenge yourself and see if you can recognize any!

Harry Potter Magical Creatures Aragog

With the help of production designer Stuart Craig, Nick Dudman created the gigantic spider-like creature in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Aragog had a leg span of more than 18 feet, a truly magnificent sight. People scared of spiders will have a tough time witnessing these creatures in Harry Potter.

Each Aragog’s hair was individually inserted by hand using a special needle using many different materials, from brooms, bristles and pieces of coconut to the center of features.

It took more than 15 people to operate the animatronic Aragog. Four people acted as puppeteers behind the scenes to work the four back legs.
