Atomium was built in 1958 for the World’s Fair organized in Brussels that year.
It consists of nine spheres and resembles a unit of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times.
It was initially supposed to be a temporary attraction, but its popularity led to the Atomium becoming a permanent fixture in Brussels.
That was a wise decision, as it still attracts many visitors today.
The architects of Atomium Construction were Andre and Jean Polak. Andre Waterkeyn engineered it.
The Atomium stands 102 meters tall and was renovated from 2004 to 2006.
It weighs 2500 metric tonnes.
The Atomium architecture initially consisted of aluminum sheets (from where it gets its name), but the renovations replaced it with stainless steel.
The Atomium symbolizes the peaceful application of atomic research post-war and promotes the use of these advanced technologies for the benefit of humanity instead of using them as weapons.
With the Atomium tickets, you can enter the Atomium Brussels and embark on an immersive tour through science, history, and culture.
What is Inside Atomium?
Inside the Atomium, Brussels’ most famous tourist attraction, is a unique opportunity to get some fantastic views of the city along with many other facilities.
You can access six of the nine spheres inside the Atomium publicly. One of these spheres is the event sphere, which is rental only.
There is also a kids’ sphere, with one level entirely reserved for kids. So, you can only access five spheres during a tour.
The Atomium’s interior has an elevator connecting people to the topmost sphere with breathtaking views.
In the Atomium, Brussels has also dedicated a permanent exhibition relating to the time it was built.
At the very top, there is also a panoramic restaurant. This unique dining establishment provides a view that no other place in Brussels can match.
In addition to these features, the rentable spheres are also used for parties, film screenings, concerts, and other events.
The Atomium is as attractive from the inside, if not more, as it is from the outside.
The outside of Atomium was fitted with LED lights during the two-year renovation and glows with beautiful patterns at night.
Atomium is a must-see when visiting Brussels and has several attractions nearby. It is outside the city’s center, but you can easily see it at the right time by following an itinerary.
Apart from all the excellent features we have discussed, just walking around to get to the spheres is also far from mundane.
Inside the Atomium, Brussels’ most popular attraction, features stunning lighting in the stairways, which adds to the overall experience.
The design of the tubes connecting the spheres is gorgeous. The view from the Atomium lends itself to many unique and cool photos, but there are several opportunities for a selfie inside the structure as well.
Overall, the visit is a fun one with lots to experience. In under two hours, you can explore the structure and have a good time outside and inside the Atomium in Brussels.
