St. Mark’s Basilica is one of the most iconic landmarks in Venice, and it’s a must-see for any visitor to the city.

However, with so many people flocking to see it, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed.

Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your visit:

Arrive early

The basilica is open from 9.30 am to 5.15 pm, but it’s best to arrive early to avoid the crowds.

If you’re visiting during peak season, you may even want to consider purchasing a St. Mark’s Basilica skip the line ticket.

Dress appropriately

St. Mark’s Basilica is a religious site, so it is important to dress respectfully.

The dress code for the Basilica at St. Mark’s prohibits bare shoulders and knees.

This means you should wear clothes that cover your shoulders and go to your knees, such as long pants, a long skirt, or a dress.

You can also wear a scarf or shawl to cover your shoulders.

If you do not have appropriate clothing, you can purchase a pareo for €1 at the entrance to the basilica.

Here are some additional tips on the St. Mark’s Basilica dress code:

  • Avoid wearing revealing or tight-fitting clothing.
  • Avoid wearing clothing with offensive or profane language or images.
  • Remove your hat and sunglasses before entering the Basilica.
  • Be respectful of other visitors and the religious significance of the site.

Photography is not allowed

There’s a lot to see and take in at St. Mark’s Basilica, so don’t rush through your visit.

Take your time to admire the architecture, the mosaics, and the artwork like the Pala d’Oro.

But be careful when taking pictures and videos.

The Basilica at St. Mark’s has certain rules regarding taking pictures and videos.

This is because the art and artifacts inside are copyrighted, which means that the artist or owner of the piece has the right to say who can use it.

If you take a picture or video of a copyrighted work, you could be breaking the law.

There are a few exceptions to this rule, though.

Sometimes, museums and churches will allow you to take pictures or videos if you ask permission first.

They may also allow you to take pictures or videos if you are using a special camera or phone that does not use flash.

Listen to the audio guide

The audio guide is a great way to learn more about the history and significance of St. Mark’s Basilica.

It’s available in multiple languages.

Leave your bags outside

You won’t be allowed to bring big backpacks or bags inside.

You will have to leave them in the coatroom at the entrance, but don’t worry, it doesn’t cost anything.

Take a break

After exploring the basilica, take a break and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of St. Mark’s Square.

Grab a coffee or gelato and people-watch.
