The Vatican Papal Audience is conducted every Wednesday. It typically begins at 9 am, but attendees often arrive early to secure a good spot. Security checks start at 7 to 7.30 am, and the crowd usually gathers between 7.30 and 8.30 am, particularly in peak season when attendance surges.

The Pope moves through all sections of the Papal Audience and gives his blessings at 9 am. There are no Papal Audiences held in July month, and on other important catholic days, like Christmas. But you can hear a special mass from the Pope on such important days at St. Peter’s Basilica!

The Holy Father’s official schedule for the Papal Audiences is uploaded a few weeks before the audience’s date. You must check the Vatican website to confirm the schedule before planning your visit.

Where can I listen to the Pope in the Vatican?

The Papal Audience is usually held in St. Peter’s Square, outside St. Peter’s Basilica. The Square can accommodate around 300,000 people at one time. In the very warm months and during the winter, you can attend it in the Paul VI Papal Audience Hall in the Vatican. The hall is smaller than the Square and can hold only 6,300 pilgrims.

When booking the seats through a letter or fax, you must mention that you would like to sit in this section and show proof of marriage. Here are some criteria you must match to apply for this seating section:

The couple should have married at least 2 months before the audience they plan to attend. Sometimes, couples married a year before are also allowed to apply.
The priest or deacon who conducted the wedding should sign a sacramental marriage certificate.

Couples are expected to wear their wedding clothes when seated. If you are unable to carry your wedding clothes along, women can wear any long white dress that covers their shoulders. Men should wear a suit and tie. Traditional cultural clothes, like sarees, traditional Chinese dresses, the Iro, kimonos, and other garments are also allowed.

How do you apply for seating at St. Peter’s Basilica Holy Mass?

Visitors who want to attend a holy mass led by the Pope on festivals must follow a similar procedure to booking a papal audience seat. You can also book tickets for the Holy Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica by writing to the Prefecture of the Papal Household in advance. We recommend contacting the prefecture atleast six months in advance, as seating is limited and tickets run out soon.

Pilgrims who want to attend the special mass at St. Peter’s Basilica by the Pope can also collect tickets at the Bronze door from 9 am to 7 pm some days before. Check the official website before arriving at the bronze door, as the ticket collection timings and days change regularly.

Papal Audience Dress Code

The rules for dressing for the Papal Audience require all visitors to be fully covered, as all other churches in Rome demand.

Women’s Papal Audience Dress Code

Women should not wear sleeveless or off-the-shoulder tops or dresses to the Papal Audience if it is inside the hall. You must ensure that your shoulders are covered. Skirts and dresses reaching the knee or below, long trousers, jeans, and capri pants are allowed. If you wear sleeveless clothes, ensure you have a shawl to cover your shoulders.

Men’s Papal Audience Dress Code

No ripped jeans or short pants are allowed; men must only wear long trousers or simple jeans. Short-sleeved shirts and T-shirts are allowed.
