Spanish Riding School in Vienna is the only place where you will find the Lipizanner breed of horses. It is not just a horse farm but a unique cultural world with its own regulations.

Keep these tips in mind to make the most of your visit:

1. Dress Smartly for the Occasion

There is no dress code, but given the event, you can expect most people to come dressed in smart casual.

The grandeur and sophistication are a part of the show. Dress the part and fully immerse yourself in the world of the Spanish Riding School.

Notably, the Winter Riding Hall is not an air-conditioned room.

If you visit in the summer, it will get even hotter inside the large hall. Similarly, during the winter, the wind will make you feel quite cold.

It is best to wear layers to add or remove clothing as required.

2. Horsehair-Safe Clothing

Horsehair-Safe Clothing

The beautiful and luscious hair of the Lipizzaners flows in the wind as they run and perform, so you will find it everywhere.

Choose materials for your outfit that can withstand horsehair.

If you have allergies, carry a mask to reduce any irritation caused by the hair.

3. Age Restrictions for Young Kids

Children under three will not be admitted into the riding halls for safety reasons.

A better option to interact with the Lipizzaner horses would be the Training Center or the Piber Stud Farm

4. Horses’ Performance Schedule

It is best to visit Vienna for the Lipizzaner stallions during their training or performance season.

They are on a six-week summer vacation from July to mid-August, but you can still enjoy the Spanish Riding School architecture tours.

5. Accessibility Accommodations

The Winter Riding Hall is wheelchair accessible.

A limited number of spots are reserved for people in wheelchairs, so make sure you mention your preferences and book in advance.

The wheelchair-accessible toilet is at the Visitor’s Center for those who need these facilities.

6. Photography Rules

You can take pictures during guided tours and other non-performance visits, but please avoid using flash.

On the performances and training days, taking pictures is discouraged as it might startle the horses while they are in action.

7. Selecting the Best Tickets and Seats

There are two types of tickets: standing and seated tickets. The best view is available while you stand, as you can directly see the magnificent beauties.

You will be further away from the action if you get seats in the second gallery. So, the priority should be the first gallery.

8. Performance Durations

Performance Durations

A standard performance lasts for 70-minutes, and you have gala performances for 90-minutes. You can expect a 15-minute intermission at the midpoint.

Guided tours last approximately an hour. You can meet the horses during the tour as they rest in the stables.

9. Arrive Early and Enjoy

You must exchange your online ticket at the counter to get your physical tickets.

Ensure you give yourself enough time to exchange the ticket and find your seats before the show begins so you can be well-settled in.

10. Wardrobe and luggage

Wardrobe and luggage

There are no services to keep your luggage and coat with the Spanish Riding School while you visit.

You will be inside the Hofburg Imperial Palace, so remember to carry as little as possible.

11. Pets are not allowed at the Spanish Riding School

Pets are not allowed on the premises.Make arrangements to have someone watch your pet. You can always take them with you to the Lipizzaner Stud Piber Farm.
